Why a staircase costs the same as a room
It looks like the odd line on the price list, so here is the reasoning.
A staircase has a fraction of the floor area of a bedroom and takes more time than the bedroom does. Every tread and riser is a separate surface worked by hand, the tool has to be handled at an angle on a slope, and stairs carry the heaviest concentrated traffic in the house because everybody in it uses the same twelve square feet.
Charging by square footage would make stairs nearly free and would mean either rushing them or losing money. Pricing them as a room is the honest version.
The add-ons, and when they are worth it
All priced separately and none of them discounted. Nothing gets added to your job by anybody except you.
Pet urine treatment
For contamination in the fiber. Where it has soaked into the pad, surface treatment will not hold and we will say so rather than take the money. Full explanation.
Protectant
Worth it on newer carpet in a busy house, because it buys you the minutes between a spill and a stain. On carpet that is already worn it is protecting fiber that has already lost, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Deodorizer
For a genuine smell. Not a default, and masking an odor you have not removed lasts about a week.
Sanitizing
Worth considering after illness in the house, on carpet that has never been professionally cleaned, or where somebody has allergies.

Some spots wick back up from the pad as the carpet dries, which is a real phenomenon rather than a failure of the cleaning. It happens most with anything that soaked deep, and you frequently cannot tell it will happen until a day or two afterward.

Why we are not the cheapest
And are not trying to be.
A very low per-room price has to come out of somewhere, and it is nearly always the agitation and the rinse. Skip the agitation and you are cleaning the surface of the fiber rather than the fiber. Skip the rinse and you leave detergent behind, which attracts soil and has your carpet dirty again faster than before.
That is the mechanism behind carpet that feels crunchy and gets dirty quickly after a cheap clean. You did not get a bargain, you bought a problem.
How often to budget for it
Every 12 to 18 months for most Mesa households, sooner with pets or children.
